How to Cover Piping Cord

Covering piping cord is simple to do. A piped edge on a curtain or pelmet gives it a professional finish and draws attention to the line of the drapes. Using the same fabric as for your curtains, a piped edge is elegant and discreet. Using a contrasting fabric or color can add impact and a professional look to both curtains and pelmets.

  • When cutting your piping cord, be sure you have sufficient for the ungathered length or width of the curtain panel you wish to pipe, plus a little extra for tucking in the raw ends.
  • Cut strips of your chosen material on the bias. Cut it wide enough to cover the piping cord plus an extra 4cm to allow for the seam.
  • Place the strip of fabric right side down, and lay your piping cord along the center of the fabric. Turn over the fabric to cover the length of the cord and line up the raw edges. Pin, then tack in place close to the piping cord, completely encasing it and holding it in place.
  • Remove the pins.Using the zipper foot on your sewing machine, stitch along the right side of the fabric, as close to the encased cord as possible.
  • Remove the tacking and repeat for as many pieces of piping you need.
