How to make a pierced curtain heading

The best hanging method for a pierced curtain heading is to use a decorative curtain pole or curtain wire system.

Pierced top headings are modern. They suit comtemporary rooms. Clean lines, chic spaces with plenty of light and graphic shapes. Details should be in your textures used. Light to medium weight fabrics work best and when drawn the curtains provide an almost flat, ungathered window cover.

No hooks or heading tape is needed for a pierced heading. Metal grommets are placed at even intervals across the top of the fabric. The curtains are mounted onto the pole or curtain wire system through these grommets. Make sure you purchase grommets of a diameter wide enough to fit over your curtain handing system. We recommend using a light to medium weight fabric.

  • First of all, you need to make up your curtains. Refer to our section "how to calculate fabric amounts for curtain making" to ensure you make up curtains using the correct amount of fabric needed for a pierced heading.
  • Make unlined curtains according to our guide "how to make unlined curtains"
  • Attach iron-on fusible buckram carefully to the top of your curtain using enough to fit the width of the curtain plus a little extra either end for tucking in raw edges.
  • Use a low to medium iron heat.
  • Place the fabric right side down.Using tailors chalk, mark the position of each grommet across the top width of the curtain fabric.
  • The grommets of either side of the curtain, should be placed about 5cm inside the hemmed edge of the curtain panel.
  • Now mark a place for each grommet, about 15cm apart and 6cm down from the top hemmed edge of the curtain.
  • Make sure you work on the reverse of the fabric. Place the grommet in position, and mark around the inside diameter of the grommet.Carefully cut out the fabric inside this mark (cutting through the buckram).
  • Snap the front and back of the grommet into place, either side of the fabric. In doing so, be sure to enclose the raw edges of the circle you have just cut out.
  • Repeat until all the grommets are in place.
  • Slide both finished curtains onto your pole or curtain wire system, through the grommet holes.
  • The addition of the stiff buckram means that the fabric will not sag in between the grommets when the curtains are drawn back.
