How to Make Austrian Blinds
They may look fancy, but austrian blinds are actually easy to make. Follow this simple step by step guide to
help you create your own professional austrian blinds easily.
Calculate the fabric amount required for your austrian blind.
If necessary, join fabric panels together for a very wide window. See how to join fabric panels.
Make a double 1.5 cm hem along the side edges and the bottom of the fabric, turning the fabric over twice (each turn 1.5cm) to hide raw edges.
Mitre the corners and tack, then stitch the hems in place.
Fold your fabric vertically at about 60cm intervals across the entire width of the fabric. Press the fabric
to create crisp fold lines.
Using these regular intervalled folds at a guide, position your looped blind tape vertically
down the wrong side of the fabric, from top to bottom. Tuck a 1cm raw edge of blind tape under at either end.
Make sure that the first loop up from the bottom of your fabric is positioned about 1cm up from the bottom
edge.
Make sure that the looped line up evenly across the width of the fabric.
If you want to, you can place your first length of tape about 15cm in from either side of the fabric, this will create wonderful "tails" on either
side of your austrian blind when it is pulled up. All other lengths of blind tape must be spaced at regular intervals across the
width of the fabric.
If you don't want to create these "tails" either edge of the blind, simply place blind tape along
either side edge of the blind and continue to space the others pieces of blind tape at regular intervals across
the back of the blind about 60cm apart. When the blind is gathered across the heading, the blind tape
will end up being at about 30cm regular intervals.
First tack, then stitch each length of the looped blind tape in place. Do stitch the tape (using a thread that is
an exact color match for your fabric) in the same
direction along both edges. this will secure each piece of tape with two rows and stitching and avoid
puckering of the fabric. Do not worry that the stitching will be visible from the front
of the blind. The design of the blind ensures that these stitches won't be noticeable to the eye.
Pin, and tack in place a 3cm hem across the top of the fabric. Place your chosen heading tape
across the width of the top of the fabric, as close to the top edge as possible. Pin, tack and stitch the
heading tape in place, tucking under the raw edged sides. This heading tape will hide the raw edge of the turning
of your hem.
Draw up your heading tape into the style you have chosen. Make sure the blind width is the same
width as your window. Thread cord through each of the loops of your vertical blind tape, starting with the bottom
loop and securing a piece of the cord with a small knot. Thread the cords up through each loop and
mount your austrian blind. See instructions for installing your austrian blind.
