How to calculate fabric amount for an austrian blind

  • Measure the drop of your window. Add 6cm for hem allowances. This is the total length of fabric required.
  • Measure the width of your window. Multiply this width by two. You will need fabric double the width of your window to allow for the gathered heading. Add 6cm for side hems. Divide this by the width of your fabric and round up to the next nearest whole number. This is the number of fabric widths you need.
  • Multiply length by number of fabric widths. This is how much fabric you should purchase.
  • If you need more than one width of fabric, join fabric panels together for a wide window. See How to Join Fabric Panels.

    Looped blind tape

Tape for austrian blinds has small loops or rings placed at regular intervals along the tape. You attach a length of cord to the lowest ring, and thread the cord up through each ring. The cord pulls up to form gathers across the back of the blind.

Calculate the amount of blind tape you need to purchase by measuring the drop of your blind, and multiplying by the number of folds you have vertically pressed onto your fabric at intervals of about 60cm apart.

Allow a little extra so each end of the blind tape can be turned under so no raw edges are visible.
